A rising doctor, who has eyes for only money, is driving cross-country on his way to fame and fortune in Beverly Hills as a cosmetic surgeon. Benjamin Stone (Michael J. Fox) gets sidetracked in the small town of Grady, SC, and is sentenced to assist the local doctor for about a week. While doing so, he has a continuing sagaof finding the parts to get his Jaguar fixed. While there he becomes romantically involved with Vilula (Julie Warner) a local girl who went away and came back to stay. He clashes with the retiring local doctor, who shows the hotshot a few doctoring tricks not taught in med school, but as time goes on Stone gets resetnful in missing his big opportunity, but the town and the people start to grow on him, and he starts to realize that there is more to life than money. He finally finishes his sentence, gets his car fixed, and his opportunity in California is saved thru the intervention of the local doctor, but he leaves the girl behind. Once there he decides to make a few changes in his life.
