A girl is contacted by a man, Yevgraf Zhivago (Alec Guinness), who believes her to be his brother's child. Hoping to spark her memory, he tells her the story of his brother's life. Yuri Zhivago (Omar Shariff), orphaned at a young age, grew up with the Gromeko family. He married their daughter Tonya (Geraldine Chaplin). Yuri became both a poet and a well-to-do doctor. At the same time a girl named Lara (Julie Christie) grew up living with her mother. She got involved with two dangerous men. During WWI, Zhivago and Lara ran a hospital for wounded soldiers. After the war they went their separate ways only to meet again and have an affair until Yuri broke it off. Going to tell Larab he was arrested and conscripted into the army where he served for 2 years. After his army service Yuri was unable to find his family. Instead he found Lara. The two lived in an abandoned estate and Yuri wrote his famous Lara poems. When Yuri learned that Lara was in danger because of her radical husband, he sent her away. She became separated from their daughter and asked Yuri's brother, Yefgraf, to help find her.
