Billy Chapel (Kevin Costner) is a pitcher for the Detroit Tigers in the twilight of his career. The entire film takes place over the course of one final game, at Yankee Stadium, no less, with flashbacks from Billy's career occuring throughout. He must fight through injury and fatigue as his catcher, Gus (John C. Reilly), tries to maintain Chapel's focus on the mound. Chapel's flashback memories from moments on the field and in the clubhouse are intermixed with stories of meeting the woman he loves (Kelly Preston) and the strain baseball has put on their relationship. Cameos from well-known broadcasters including Vin Scully and Steve Lyons.
