George Monroe (Kevin Kline)had always been meaning do the things in life that would make him happy, but instead he struggled along in a dead-end job as an architect and a failing marriage, raising a rebellious son. One of the things he had always envisioned doing was tearing down a broken-down house with a beautiful view of the ocean he had inherited and building one of his architectural dreams in its place. When he discovered he has terminal cancer, he forces his son Sam (Hayden Christensen) to help him in the project. Without revealing that he is sick, tearing down the old structure becomes the symbol of hashing through everything he has done wrong in his life and with his relationship with his son to find forgiveness. Building the new house becomes the symbol of reconciliation with his son and his wife.
