Riggs (Mel Gibson) and Murtaugh (Danny Glover) are demoted to patrol officers after they literally blow (up) their response to a bomb threat. While on patrol they stop an armored car robbery only to find that the perps are using automatic weapons with armor-piercing ammunition. With the reluctant assistance of Internal Affairs Sergeant Lorna Cole (Rene Russo) they discover the weapons were confiscated by the LAPD and then stolen by ex-officer Jack Travis (Stuart Wilson). He is selling the guns to gangs and laundering the money through a housing development he is building. The case becomes personal to Murtaugh when he kills a gang member toting one of the stolen guns and then learns the dead boy is the son of a friend. Leo Getz (Joe Pesci), now a real estate agent helping Murtaugh to sell his house in order to fund his retirement, gives the trio useful information on Travis, allowing them to track him down and continue with this movie’s theme of total destruction of buildings.
