Two complete strangers meet on a crowded street in a busy city. Dan (Jude Law) and Alice (Natalie Portman) seem completely in love, but things are not always as they seem. Dan, a hopeful author, meets Anna (Julia Roberts) at a photo shoot for his book cover, and cannot get thoughts of her out of his mind. His unrequited love for Anna leads him to playing a nasty prank on a stranger he meets on an Internet chat site. Anna meets this stranger, and Larry (Clive Owen) turns out to be exactly what she thinks she's looking for. What follows is an exploration of modern relationships, as both of the couples, and each of the people, face the bitter struggles which occur when love misbehaves.
