A true story of four allied prisoners of war during the Second World War. The film is based on the autobiographical book "Through the Valley of the Kwai" by Ernest Gordon. The film introduces an allied soldier named Ernest Gordon (Ciarán McMenamin). The story follows his capture along with his fellow soldiers Lieutenant Jim Reardon (Kiefer Sutherland) and Major Ian Campbell (Robert Carlyle). The men face the harsh treatment of a Japanese prison of war camp. The men are horribly treated and are used to build a railroad through the unforgiving Burmese jungle. Gordon must overcome several obstacles including malnutrition, malaria and even the removal of a human organ in an extremely primitive fashion. Gordon ends up on a death ward where he meets Dusty Miller (Mark Strong), a gardener from London who cares for his health.
