Sinbad (Brad Pitt) is a pirate, sailing the high seas in search of treasure to steal, when he comes across an old friend, Proteus, who is charged with bringing the Book of Peace to Syracuse. The Book of Peace is what keeps the Twelve Cities safe, so when Eris (Michelle Pfeiffer), the Goddess of Chaos, pretends to be Sinbad and steals the book, the council for the Twelve Cities sentences him to death. Proteus believes that Sinbad didn’t take the book, so he takes Sinbad’s place, giving Sinbad the chance to go steal the book back from Eris. Proteus’s fiancée, Marina (Catherine Zeta-Jones), sneaks about Sinbad’s ship and goes with him to make sure he doesn’t leave Proteus to die. So together they have to face the perils on the way to Tartarus, where they will find Eris and try to take back the Book of Peace.
