Tom Baker (Steve Martin) fears that his family is growing apart now that the kids are older and have lives of their own. With eldest daughter Nora (Piper Perabo) about to give birth and next oldest Lorraine (Hilary Duff) headed to the city for a job, Tom decides it's time for one last family outing. He gathers all twelve kids, plus one wife (Bonnie Hunt) and one son-in-law for a trip to the lake. But what starts out as a fun family gathering soon turns into a contest of one-upmanship thanks to the oh so perfect clan next door. Jimmy Murtaugh (Eugene Levy) has everything, a beautiful house, a gorgeous young wife (Carmen Electra) and well-bred, intelligent children. He also holds the title as the winner of the yearly Labor Day family competition, but all that is going to change if Tom and Baker's dozen have anything to say about.
