This film is based on the one-act play written by David Mamet. The story takes place in New York City and the central character is Edmund Burke (William H Macy), a middle-class worker. Burke visits a fortune teller (Frances Bay) whose words of warning lead him to leave his wife (Rebecca Pidgeon) and visit the darker side of New York City's nightlife. Burke visits many different places in this darker New York City including a bordello and a peep show. One confrontation occurs when Burke accuses a street three card monte dealer of cheating his customers. Burke is subsequently beaten by the man, but continues his journey in New York City's dark underbelly where he encounters more conflict. Supporting characters include (Joe Mantegna) as a patron in a bar and (Mena Suvari) as a whore.
