Set during the early events of the American Civil War, the deeply religious General Thomas Jackson (Stephen Lang) together with General Robert E. Lee (Robert Duvall) are forced to rethink their battle plans as the number of soldiers killed in battle rises alarmingly. In charge of the opposing Union troops is Colonel Joshua Chamberlain (Jeff Daniels) who is a very poetic man and famous for his recitals to his troops before entering the war zone. Beginning with the start of the war and ending with the death of General Jackson, the film depicts the three main battles leading up to Gettysburg. Heroes from both sides of the American Civil War are given equal prominence in this account of the lives of the anonymous soldiers and citizens who fought for their vision of freedom and unity.
