After her mother Ingrid (Michelle Pfiffer) poisons and kills the lover of her life and is sentenced to life in prison, teenager Astrid Magnussen (Alison Lohman) is left to float from foster home to foster home. The first home is that of Starr(Robin Wright Penn) a reformed stripper and drug addict. After Astrid has an affair with Starr’s boyfriend, Starr returns to alcohol and shoots Astrid. At the second home, Astrid is required to take care of young children. When she befriends the prostitute neighbor, she is expelled from the home. At the third house she and the other girls that live there are denied food to the point of near starvation. The fourth family is happy at first until the wife, Clair (Renee Zellweger), falls into depression and commits suicide. Meanwhile, Ingrid is appealing to get out of prison, Astrid eventually meets her real father, and begins to form her own life with her boyfriend Paul (Patrick Fugit).
