A dramatic plane crash in the Sahara desert sets the scene for Flight of the Phoenix. The passengers, mainly workers travelling between oil fields in the desert, are left stranded on the dunes with a fast diminishing supply of water and only the wreckage of the plane providing shelter from the sun. It is up to the pilot (James Stewart) and the navigator (Richard Attenborough) to keep morale up, while one quiet member of the group, Heinrich Dorfmann (Hardy Kruger), having revealed himself as an aeronautical engineer, begins the almost impossible task of building a new plane from the wreckage of the old.
