In 2058, Earth is being depleted. The natural resources are dwindling, and as a result, humankind must find another world to support them. Their only hope of reaching another planet, is to construct a Hyper Gate, so they can instantly move through many light years of space, to their chosen new planet; Alpha Prime. Unfortunately, the Hyper Gate will only work if there is a receiving side. Thus, Professor John Robinson (William Hurt) and his family, along with Major West (Matt LeBlanc), a fighter pilot, are frozen in suspended animation for the 10 year trip to Alpha Prime so they can build the receiver and save humanity. Unfortunately, the terrorist Dr. Smith (Gary Oldman) tries to sabotage the mission, but ends up getting stuck onboard the ship. As the ship starts to fall toward the sun, their only hope is to wake up and use the hyper drive to escape the sun, except they fly into an uncharted part of space. Now, they have to locate Alpha Prime not only to save themselves, but the rest of humanity.
