Based on S. E. Hinton’s 1967 novel of the same name, Francis Ford Coppola’s The Outsiders is a study of socioeconomic stratification and societal tension among the American youth of the 1960s. Ponyboy Curtis (C. Thomas Howell) leads a turbulent existence as a have-not “greaser” in 1960s Tulsa, along with his brothers, Darry (Patrick Swayze) and Sodapop (Rob Lowe), and a tight-knight gang of compatriots, including Two-Bit Mathews (Emilio Estevez), Dallas Winston (Matt Dillon), and Johnny Cade (Ralph Macchio). Ponyboy’s life is abruptly interrupted following an encounter between him and Johnny and two girls belonging to the wealthy clique of “socs” (Diane Lane and Michelle Meyrink), an encounter which leads to more violence and sorrow than the members of either group suspect.
