U.S. Marshal Sam Gerard’s boss tells him to take a vacation after a convict alleges that Sam (Tommy Lee Jones) used unnecessary force on the job. Before he takes his mandated vacation she assigns him one last task. His job is to accompany the convict while he is being transferred across states lines on a government prison aircraft. This task is never completed. The aircraft is jeopardized when a convict tries to kill another convict on board. The victim happens to be Mark Roberts (Wesley Snipes) who flees during the confusion of the crash landing. There goes Sam Gerard’s vacation as he races against the clock to capture the fugitive. During the chase a Special Agent John Royce (Robert Downey Jr.) is assigned to Gerard’s team. Yet Royce’s presence turns out to be more of a hindrance than help. Soon another matter starts to bother Gerard. It seems that there is more to Roberts than just the cold blooded murder that everyone portrays. Gerard learns some shocking truths and uncovers hidden secrets in his chase of Roberts.
