Mad Max Rockatansky (Mel Gibson) and his dog wander the deserts of post-Apocalyptic Australia looking for scarce gasoline for his supercharged V8. He drives off a group of bikers led by Wez (Vernon Wells) and scavenges their gasoline for his own vehicle. Soon he runs across an apparently abandoned but booby-trapped auto gyro and forces its pilot (Bruce Spence) to reveal the location of a functioning refinery. Max finds the refinery but it is under siege by Lord Humungus (Kjell Nielsen), Wez and the crazy bikers who savagely kill the settlers occupying it whenever they try to escape. One settler survives an attempt and Max promises to return him to the refinery in exchange for fuel. Lord Humungus convinces the settlers and their leader Pappagallo (Michael Preston) that he will allow them to live if they leave the working refinery to him. Max finds them a Mack truck in exchange for gasoline. When Max attempts to leave the bikers destroy his car and wound him badly. He is rescued by the gyro pilot and decides to help the settlers leave the refinery despite the best and most explosive efforts of Humungus and his gang.
