In the 19th century, a Quaker family in Indiana known as the Birdwells consists of Jess (Gary Cooper), Eliza (Dorothy McGuire), his wife; their daughter and two sons. Their older boy, Josh (Anthony Perkins), tries to be courageous, while the little boy, Jess (Richard Eyer), deals with a difficult pet goose called Samantha. Little Jess also tries to protect his sister and mother from soldiers. The widow Hudspeth (Marjorie Main) has two daughters who desire Josh. The Civil War breaks out and the Quakers try to resist it because they are religious pacifists, even when one of their friends is killed.
