Sara Crewe (Shirley Temple) lives with her father, Captain Crewe (Ian Hunter). When Captain Crewe goes off to war, he places Sara in a school for girls under the direction of Miss Minchin (Mary Nash). However, when the Captain is missing in action and can no longer pay for the school, Miss Minchin relegates Sara to servant status. She has to sleep in the attic with the other servant girl and do all kinds of manual labor while the other girls make fun of her. Sara refuses to admit her father is dead. She persistently goes to the local hospital looking for him. She gets discouraged, especially since it's so miserable living with Miss Minchin, but her father had always told her to be a good soldier, so she keeps her chin up. When her father does end up in a hospital she visits, she almost misses him. At the last minute she finds him, but is hurt when he doesn't know her because he has amnesia. However, seeing her wakes up his memory, and they are together again.
