Dorothy (Judy Garland) lives on a Kansas farm with her aunt (Clara Blandick) and uncle (Charley Grapewin). When a nasty neighbor wants to take her dog away, Dorothy runs away. She meets Professor Marvel (Frank Morgan) who looks into his crystal ball and sends her home. On the way, a cyclone blows up. Her aunt and uncle and their 3 hired hands, Hunk (Ray Bolger), Hickory (Jack Haley), and Zeke (Bert Lahr) have all gone into the storm cellar, but Dorothy can't get in. Back in the house she's knocked out by a window being blown in. Her house lands in Munchkinland in the land of Oz. Glinda, the good witch, (Billie Burke) tells her her house killed the Wicked Witch of the East. Giving her the witch's ruby slippers, Glinda advisess Dorothy to go to the wizard in the Emerald City but to beware the Wicked Witch of the West.. Dorothy follows the yellow brick road meeting the Scarecrow, the Tin Woodman, and the Cowardly Lion who help her along the way. At the Emerald City the wizard says "Bring me the witch's broomstick, and I'll help you". Though almost killed, the quartet melts the witch and takes her broomstick. The wizard offers Dorothy a hot air balloon trip home, but she misses the ride. Then Glinda tells her to click the ruby slippers together and she'll be back to Kansas. Back in Kansas, no one believes her tale.
