Henry Limpet (Don Knotts) is a quiet bookkeeper in New York City. He has but one passion in his life -- fish. As World War II is on the horizon, Henry tries to enlist in the Navy but is rejected. Downtrodden by this rejection, Henry stumbles off a pier at Coney Island. To his surprise and delight, he discovers he has magically turned into a fish. Disappearing into the sea as a fish, his wife Bessie (Carole Cook) and friends assume he has died. Deciding to help the Navy out hunting German U-boats, Henry (as a bespectacled fish) gets commissioned an officer and begins to advance to higher and higher ranks. Ultimately, his magical abilities as a fish turn out to be deciding factors in the Allied Victory in the Battle of the Atlantic.
