A shy, introverted boy named Walter is dropped off by his flighty, irresponsible mother on his great-uncles' doorstep. The two great-uncles, Hub and Garth, are hardly glad to have him around. They seem to take pleasure in scaring and shocking shy Walter. According to popular rumor, the two men are hiding a great fortune. Walter isn't sure what to believe, but he does notice that his great-uncles have a steady supply of money coming from somewhere. The origins of this fortune are unknown, and the mystery grows from there. As they get used to each other, Walter starts encouraging his great-uncles to use their manners and eat their vegetables, and they start to tell him stories, revealing snippets of their past adventures. They rescue an over-the-hill lioness from a circus dealer, and Walter names her Jasmine. When his mother flits back on the scene with a shady character, trying to get Hub and Garth's money, Walter makes a decision. Tired of his flighty mom and finally believing in the magic of his great-uncles' stories, he chooses to stay with them and live their eccentric life with them.
